  P. G. Wodehouse — Mr. Mulliner tells

  P. G. Wodehouse’s collection of stories about Mr. Mulliner and his many relatives got into my player quite by accident. But as soon as I started listening, I realized that this is love. Good old England did not die with the beginning of the twentieth century. Eccentric aristocrats and their high-bred valets are alive to this day. They play golf,…

«The Good, the Bad, the Ugly» is a spaghetti western

The term «Spaghetti Western» has been known to me for a long time. I didn’t really think about its origin and meaning, I just thought that it was called cheap westerns, where there are a lot of gunfights and little realism. And so, last week, my world shook. I learned that The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is also a…

Review of the Rammstein concert in Kyiv

ZhZhZhZh-D-D-D-D-ZhZhZhZh-D-D-D-Bah!!! — this is how the great and terrible Rammstein died down in Kyiv on March 9, 2010. Going to the concert, I prudently plugged my ears with cotton, and therefore for me it was a little quieter (zhzhzh-d-d-d …), but the general principle is still the same, and you can’t plug your eyes with cotton — THIS had to…

  Shutter Island

A quote from a classic. There is nothing new in Shutter Island, but the old is so well stitched and fitted together that there can be no question of the dust of

  Altyn-tolobas

I read the first book about «The Adventures of the Master» and the second, and therefore many of the author’s surprises were no longer surprises for me. I mean the scandalous helplessness of Fandorin, already praised by me earlier. But I had enough attention to keep track of other bursts in my own reader’s brain. The most significant of them is…

  extracurricular reading

It so happened that I began my acquaintance with Akunin’s series «Adventures of the Master» with the second book — «Extracurricular Reading». It was all the more curious then to read the first one, and compare, compare :)The main surprise of the series is the master himself. Nicholas Fandorin is a new, rare type of hero. He is Burdock, Hedgehog…

And I punish, severely punish — catchphrases from the film «Eggs of Destiny»

One of the highlights of the film «Our Russia: Eggs of Destiny» is Viktor Maryanovich with his catchphrase «And I punish, severely punish.» For 85 minutes of the film, the main villain says these words 8 times. And the audience will repeat this phrase thousands more times, it has every chance to become «winged». Especially for future textbooks on the…

  Wuthering Heights

Illogical creatures try to multiply, but die en masse from depression and tuberculosis. That was the «dry residue» after reading «Wuthering Heights» by Emily Bronte. It is clear that the novel did not get me, and I did not want to write a review until I looked at Wikipedia…Japanese God! It turns out that this is not a simple book, but…

  Pause value

When you read a Real Book or watch a Real Movie, it happens that you really want to stop. Pause the movie/book and take a breather. Enjoy your experiences, consider them, and maybe even admire yourself. Excellent picture: «I am spiritualized.» Such a state is not a sin to remember. Feeling uplifted, knowing that you are capable of it can…

  Pelagia and the red rooster

When I sat down to read another book about the adventures of a detective nun, I did not expect anything special from it (the book). Just wanted to «rest» after a bit of heavyweight Eco. Basically, that’s what happened. It was easy to read, I did not want to stop, I did not have time to get bored. But ……

  Eco Foucault

I’ve been sitting for 40 minutes, sorting through photos, rummaging through Wikipedia, and I don’t dare to start writing about Umberto Eco’s Foucault’s Pendulum. I have almost finished reading this book and it’s time to urgently write about my impressions «>until cool). But I don’t want to.I don’t know what’s the matter. The book did not go unnoticed, it miraculously…

Should I come up with a new genre?

At school, I always considered essays on literature to be my «horse». It’s a great piece of writing based on a book you’ve read. You analyze, fantasize, brazenly lie… and you have a good reason for everything. And at the heart of everything, of course, is a solid work of a classic, and not your unstoppable random number generator.School has…

  invention of lies

I’m sitting and watching a movie. It’s called The Invention of Lies. Watched up to 50 minutes and really wanted to stop. No, the movie is fine — the movie is wonderful. I realized that I watched it to the positive climax of the plot. According to the logic of things, a decline should begin now, some kind of trouble…

  Puzzle came together

I do not know about you, but I am periodically haunted by the feeling of the integrity of the world. I notice that everything is connected — an idea I read about last week, a random phrase dropped by a passerby, yesterday’s movie, and the «meaning» of events that happened to me. This connection is very thin, almost weightless, and…

List of books read in 2009

In 2009, I read a single book! All the other books learned during the year were read to me by other people. We are, of course, talking about audiobooks (Long live Torrents.Ru!)The list of readings below is very rough, and is the result of a quick look at the audiobook folder on my portable hard drive. In 2010, I expect to…
