TV shows are convenient
I used to think that people watch TV shows because they don’t have a choice. Like, it’s cheaper for greedy TV channels to buy one soap opera and close the issue of evening prime time than to constantly look for suitable feature films, risk being misunderstood and spend millions on it.But now the era of mass and high-speed Internet has…

Quick focus video on a DSLR
Experimenting with shooting video on a DSLR (Canon 600d), I constantly encountered focusing errors. As you know, in DSLRs there is no normal autofocus for video. It is impossible to use the «focus by image» mode because it is torture (you press the shutter release and the lens starts buzzing back and forth for a long and tedious time until…

The secrets of our brain — the wrong book
The book «Secrets of our brain. Or why smart people do stupid things» (authors Sandra Amodt and Sam Wong) I read easily and with interest. And only now, having sat down for a review, I realized that the book is wrong and teaches bad things. At first glance, everything is cool — an entertaining story about the work of the human…

Retouch = Retouch (re-touch)
I, like many amateur photographers, want my pictures to look cool. For the sake of this, I agree not only to invest big money in the Japanese economy, but I am also ready to spend half an hour processing photos before showing them to friends or posting them on the net. And yesterday, having seen enough in the network of…

How do I buy a SLR
I come to the store… Yes, it was in a real offline store, I did not dare to buy a DSLR through an online courier. So, I go into the store, my mood is upbeat, I’m a little worried, but at the same time I’m determined to spend a bag of money. In other words, I carry the full range…

How to start blogging
This blog is actually three hundred years old this Saturday, but for the last 3-4 months it has been completely abandoned. So I had to make some effort (almost violence) on myself to start leading him again. And for some reason I decided that I should start not with a normal article, but with some kind of introductory stupidity — a…

To Crimea by car — review of the route through Odessa
In 2011 we decided to go to Crimea (from Kyiv) along a new route — through Odessa. Before that, we drove through Pervomaisk and through Zaporozhye. The decision was taken spontaneously — in the sense that we did not have any evidence that it was better this way.As a result of the experiment, we ended up … in the Crimea…

The film «City of Thieves»
Bandits in America also wear tracksuits! This is the main piece of news I learned from Ben Affleck’s «City of Thieves». Films about bank robbers and other criminal characters make up a significant part of the film distribution, and they probably showed clothing typical of the criminal environment more than once. But I had to put on a tracksuit and…

News about the earthquake in Japan.
The whole world is chained to TV screens — people watch endless news releases about the earthquake in Japan. Everyone is watching, but I’m holding on. Our TV has been disconnected from the antenna for a month now and only shows what I ask it to. As a result, we learned about the Japanese disaster much later than the rest…

Error 500 Internal Server Error when updating WordPress
Today I was updating WordPress from 2.9.1 to 3.1 and of course ran into an error. After I uploaded a new version of the engine to ftp, the blog stopped opening (both the frontend and the admin panel) and gave out only the classic «500 Internal Server Error» message. Redownloading did not help, looking under the hood did not help…

How to make a voiceover for a video?
Recently I have become interested in video editing. I edit mainly videos about my travels, distant and not so far. And then gradually came to the desire to do voice acting for the video. Not a song in the background, but the text, the voice. The question is new to me and in some places frightening, and therefore especially interesting.…

The film «Radio Wave» — readiness for a miracle.
«Radio Wave» (Frequency) is an ordinary film about the «butterfly effect» or «paradox of the murdered grandfather» (it’s almost the same thing — just time replaces space). The hero miraculously changes the past — problems begin in the present — he solves them again and again changing history.Good movie with good actors. But it’s a very standard story. And this…

And the smoke of the fatherland is sweet to us.
Smoke barely perceptibly wafted from the open window. Apparently at a nearby construction site, something is burning again. But for some reason, my thoughts did not linger on the word «construction» (the repair is finally completed). I did not think about campaigns, where there is more than enough smoke. Moreover, I did not turn to the topic of «sweet smoke…

Rotation of songs on the radio
Recently, I began to listen to the radio much more often because, firstly, I spend a lot of time in the car, and secondly, rock has revived in Kyiv — a radio station whose broadcasting format largely coincides with my tastes (a lot of rock and heavy classics).Watching the rotation of songs on Radio Rocks (the same station), I noticed…

The real cause of the unrest in Egypt
In the morning, they said on the radio that they were on the trail of villains in Egypt, who at the end of January took advantage of the unrest in the city and stole the statue of Tutankhamun from the Cairo Museum. There is a version that the villains were random people and took the first thing that came to…

127 hours — a film about a climber
Of course, the hero of the film «127 hours» was not exactly a climber. What he was doing before getting stuck in the crevasse could be more like canyoning or even multisport (given his bike ride and swimming in an underground reservoir). But the conversation is not about terminology.Talking about what I (as a viewer and as a tourist) was…

Movie «What Men Talk About»
«What Men Talk About» is definitely a good movie. Praise him (or scold) is not very interesting. But while I was watching this movie, I wondered what the nature of humor is. When does a person laugh? How to «make» a joke?If we consider «What Men Talk About» from this point of view, then everything is quite simple — I…

Movies of the last week
What to do in the evenings if the repair in the apartment is already completed, but the TV has not yet been bought?Correctly! You need to watch movies on a laptop (the Internet appeared in the apartment before hot water and a refrigerator). Last week we watched so many of these films that it is not possible to write about…

Tearless Shampoo (and Lauryl Sulfate)
Between New Year’s campaigns I rented a room in Simferopol — I wanted to wash my clothes well and wash my clothes. There was a shower, hot water too, but there was no shampoo. Therefore, I washed my hair with ordinary soap. Of course, it got into my eyes, and it began to «pinch», so actively that I wanted to…

The film «Gosford Park» — an unusual detective story
It’s not often that my family manages to get me out for a movie screening. This time I bought into the promise of the classic English detective story. I was hoping to enjoy the atmosphere of good old England and practice a little (after all, everyone is interested in guessing the killer before the brilliant detective in the final scene…

«Oh God» — 1977 film
It’s simple — God appears to the common man and appoints him as the messiah. Go, they say, bring the good news to the masses (that I am).For some reason this story seemed very familiar to me. Somewhere I have seen or read something similar. Similar in meaning, but not in the way of presentation. The film is very simple…

Why is there a curtain in the cinema?
For some reason, I remembered that delightful anticipation of a miracle that you experience at the moment when, after the demonstration of trailers and advertising (give «Yeralash» or «Wick»!) The curtain in the cinema crawls to the sides, the screen becomes wider , the light is completely extinguished … The movie begins. And then suddenly it became interesting — why…

Alexander Rybak — new song with metalworkers
The new song is Alexander Rybak’s performance with Norwegian metallers Keep of Kalessin (they play black-metal). This extraordinary event happened during the qualifying competition for the next Eurovision Song Contest. As far as I understand, the song itself does not participate in the competition, but in vain. I have never been fond of Rybak’s work, or black metal, and even…

Why do teachers prepare for lessons?
Why do teachers prepare for lessons? They are teachers and they know everything. That’s what I thought as a child. Now I am a travel instructor. Birthday of the Invincible Sun
The radio was playing Christmas carols like «Santa Claus is coming to town» and «Run, Rudolph, run». In between, the DJ talked about whether Coca-Cola marketing “invented” Santa or vice versa (Santa invented the drink) and other Christmas gossip. Of course, you can support the topic of gossip and grumble about «But in fact …»: about birthday of Mitra and…

Tourist — Jolie and Depp in one … Venice
I usually try not to read other people’s reviews before I write about the film myself. Excursion to the factory of Christmas decorations
On the eve of the New Year, we wanted something fabulous… and we signed up for a tour of the Christmas decorations factory. Naturally with a child.
